Nomination petitions for four Avon City Council openings will be available from the Avon Town Hall Clerk’s Office beginning Tuesday, August 9, 2022.
The deadline to file petitions with the City of Avon Clerk is Monday, August 29, 2022 at 5 p.m. Candidate information packages, including nomination petitions, can be picked up between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A minimum of 10 valid signatures of registered voters in the city are required on the petition in order to appear on the ballot.
Voters will choose four members for the council in November. The four available seats are currently held by Mayor Sarah Smith Hymes and Council member Scott Prince, who are term-limited, as well as Chico Thuon and Tamra Underwood, who are completing their first terms and are eligible for a second term.
Council members receive a salary of $500 per month and the mayor receives a monthly salary of $1,000. The mayor and acting mayor are elected from council members and each serves a two-year term. Municipal elections are non-partisan. In accordance with the city’s charter, the four candidates with the most votes in the general election will serve four-year terms.
To be eligible, candidates must be 18 years of age on the date of election, be citizens of the United States, be eligible to vote, and have resided in the City of Avon for at least one year immediately preceding said election. election.
The November 8, 2022 election will be conducted as an absentee ballot and is coordinated with the Eagle County Clerk and Recorder’s office. The City of Avon offices will serve as a voter service and voting center for the election.
