Bergen County Assistant District Attorney Killed in Hackensack Motorcycle Crash

UPDATE: A Bergen County Assistant District Attorney died of injuries sustained in a crash at a busy intersection in Hackensack on Friday afternoon, authorities confirmed.

Responding officers brought Avon Morgan, 38, to Hackensack University Medical Center after his bike collided with an SUV at Essex Street and East Railroad Avenue around 4 p.m. on July 29, responders said.

He was later pronounced dead at the hospital, said Bergen County District Attorney Mark Musella, whose Fatal Accident Unit is investigating the cause of the accident.

Firefighters extricated the driver from the SUV, who was also brought to the HUMC after complaining of neck pain. No summons was issued immediately.

It’s a measure of the man that he’s earned immense respect from the defense attorneys on the other side of the table.

He had strong litigation skills and what many in the justice system agreed was an exceptionally likeable personality.

A Teaneck native who lived in Ridgewood, Morgan joined the Bergen County District Attorney’s Office in November 2016 and most recently worked in Musella’s Grand Jury Unit presenting cases.

He was previously an administrative specialist at the Superior Court and earned his JD degree from New York Law School.

“Nobody could hate Avon. It was impossible,” defense attorney Adam Lustberg said. “I’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about him.

“He always had a smile on his face – literally,” Lustberg added. “He was one of the most genuinely nice people I’ve ever met.”
