The thought of going without food for 24 hours may scare you, but an Avon personal trainer says it could help you live better and longer.

This is called fasting, the voluntary abstention from eating and sometimes drinking. If the idea seems overwhelming, you’re not alone.

“Being hungry once in a while is actually good for your health. We constantly eat food. The average person eats for 15 hours a day. It’s not constant throughout the day. It’s from from the moment they have their first bite of food until their last Our ancestors typically ate one or two meals a day and they didn’t have Starbucks to run to every time they needed a snack or something to eat. ‘a pantry to go through whenever they needed something,’ Bo Raley, personal trainer at Exercise Inc. in Avon, said in an interview with WIBC Radio.

Since we don’t face hunger as much anymore, Raley says our senses are dulled, our brains don’t work as well, and our motivation isn’t as high. He says we are

“We live longer, but our health is shorter. If we continue at this rate in our country, half of our population will be obese by 2030. In the 1800s, doctors began to hypothesize that fasting could prevent certain diseases. Now we know scientifically they were right,” Raley said.

Raley calls fasting the way the body “takes out the trash.” He recommends skipping one meal a month. Then, as you get braver, you can try doing it once a week. Raley advises you to keep drinking water while fasting.

“When you don’t eat, your body reacts by finding damaged and unhealthy cells in the body. They then tear these cells apart and use the proteins from the damaged cells to survive and make new cells. If you skip breakfast or dinner once a week, you will eat within an 8 hour window and have the option of going 16 hours without eating. This will give your body the opportunity to destroy a lot of cells that could potentially lead you to develop cancer,” Raley said.

For example, he had clients who dined at 7 p.m. the day before, skipped breakfast, and skipped lunch. Then their next meal is at 7 p.m. the next evening to complete the 24-hour fast.

“You’ll have more energy, you’ll start to feel better, and the food will taste better,” Raley said.

If you have diabetes and want to fast, Raley says you need to talk to your doctor first.
