Avon, Indiana, female, 4 years old shot dead; police arrest 25-year-old man

A 25-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the Wednesday shooting of an Avon woman and a child, police say.

Officers were called to a home in 7300 block of Glensford Drive around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, where they found a 4-year-old girl and a woman shot dead inside the residence, the Avon Police Department said. Both were taken to hospital for treatment and are in stable condition.

“Officers have secured the scene and our agency is not looking for any other parties involved. We have no active threats or suspects in the area at this time,” the department said in a Facebook post.

Brandon Clark was previously charged on Wednesday with criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. The woman, believed to be her mother, and her 4-year-old niece were injured in the shooting.

“This is a charge we commonly see when people mishandle firearms or a firearm is left near a child,” said Brian Nugent, a police spokesman for the city. ‘Avon.

The child was shot in the legs and the woman was released from hospital, Nugent said. Both should recover from their injuries.

A man and a woman who were in the house are cooperating with investigators. Officers served a search warrant at the home and recovered several firearms. The police are still on the scene.

“We’re not known by any standard to be a community with a lot of gun violence,” Nugent said, “but we’re not immune.”

Avon Police are also working with school district police and the Department of Children’s Services to keep the home safe, Nugent said. Two other children live in the house but were in school at the time of the shooting, he said.

Police are working at the scene of a double shooting on Wednesday September 28, 2022, in the 7300 block of Glensford Drive in Avon.

Mallory Tye, 37, lives down the street and was outside with her daughter at around 12.40pm waiting for the bus to arrive when she heard sirens flooding the area and saw a rush of police cars. Tye said she had never seen anything like this in Avon before, adding that there were several families raising children in the neighborhood.

“It’s quiet here,” Tye said.

Avon is about 15 miles west of downtown Indianapolis and has a population of just over 18,000 people, according to census data.
